About us - Mission
The Diocesan Museum Graz is the museum of the Styrian Church as well as the contact address for the preservation of historical / ecclesiastical monuments of the diocese Graz-Seckau.
The diocese Graz-Seckau is the owner and preserver of the museum. The Diocesan Museum is subordinated to the bishop and is led by a custos and a director. Currently, the museum has ten employees. Additionally, we have voluntary staff in different areas.
The Diocesan Museum Graz shows a year-round permanent exhibition which contains treasures of Styrian churches. Besides that, two to three special exhibitions take place every year. Consistent with the respective exhibition topics, museum pedagogical programmes for children are offered. In addition, interested people can visit special events which accompany the exhibitions: theme walks, guided church tours, readings, lectures and festivals.
Furthermore, the museum is an information point for questions concerning ecclesiastical art, iconography and preservation of ecclesiastical monuments.
Moreover, the Diocesan Museum has a scientific reference library and a collection of periodicals. The library is public and can be visited after a notification in advance. It contains two thousand volumes in the following areas: Styriaca, conservation of historic monuments, iconography, folklore, paramentics and goldsmith’s art as well as barter catalogues of national and international museums.
Ecclesiastically relevant themes are published either in the form of books or catalogues and can be purchased in the museum shop.
